Lone Star Classic Rules - 2011
1) ELIGIBILITY
a) Any High School Drumline. All members of the drumline must be in compliance with all U.I.L. and H.B. 72 extracurricular activity and eligibility rules.
2) ENTRY
a) Drumlines must submit an online entry form and entry fee via USPS Mail or similar to

b) Entries will be acknowledged via return email for up to two (2) email addresses as shown on the entry.
c) Entry Deadline: Friday, October 21, 2011
3) PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE
a) NOTE: For 2011, the Lone Star Classic is introducing a Prelims and Finals format for the following Divisions: Standstill 1-Red, Standstill 1-Silver and Marching Divisions.
b) For the PRELIMINARIES in the Divisions where a Finals Competition is offered, and for the Standstill 2-Red, Standstill 2-Silver, the performance order will be determined by the time stamp on the electronic registration or mailed in registration with the following exceptions:
1. The Lone Star Classic Committee reserves the right to move the performance time to a plus / minus 24 minutes (2-time slots either way) to accommodate unavoidable and acceptable conflicts. Examples of acceptable conflicts are academic conflicts, SAT testing and other published UIL events. Directors are asked to be aware of these conflicts and state them on the registration.
2. RETURNING CHAMPIONS to the Lone Star Classic will automatically receive the Champion Performance Assignment as follows:
(1) Standstill 1-Red, Standstill 1-Silver and Marching Champion shall be assigned the last performance time for their Preliminary Performance Only , and
(2) Standstill 2-Red, Standstill 2-Silver shall be assigned the last performance time in their Performance Division.
(3) In the event that a returning Champion has moved into a new Division (e.g. moving from Standstill 2 to Standstill 1, moving from Standstill Silver to Standstill Red), then that team will be assigned the second last performance time within that Division or Preliminaries as applicable.
(4) Returning Champions, to retain their preferential position in the Performance Assignment, MUST register by October 15, 2011 or contact the Lone Star Classic Chairman.
3. LONESTAR CLASSIC DIRECTOR’S CRYSTAL CIRCLE Drumlines returning to the Lone Star Classic will automatically receive the Lone Star Classic Director’s Crystal Circle Performance Assignment as follow:
(1) Standstill 1-Red, Standstill 1-Silver and Marching shall be assigned available performance times immediately prior to the returning Champions for the Preliminary Performance Only, and
(2) Standstill 2-Red, Standstill 2 –Silver shall be assigned performance times immediately prior to the returning Champions.
(3) In the event that more than one Lone Star Classic Director’s Crystal Circle is in the Preliminary or Division, then the order of performance will be determined by the time stamp of the electronic or mail-in registration.
(4) Lone Star Classic Director’s Crystal Circle Drumlines, to retain their preferential position in the Performance Assignment, MUST register by October 15, 2011 or contact the Lone Star Classic Chairman.
c) Performance times assigned in the FINALS PERFORMANCES, shall be determined by a random drawing as follows:
1. Immediately after the awards (Standstill 1-Red will be at 3:00), the five directors of each Division will be invited to the Press Box to attend a random drawing,
2. Each Director, in reverse order of their performance (last performance shall draw first and so on), shall take turns drawing from a container containing 26 alphabet tiles,
3. The order of the Finals Performance will then be alphabetical per the tile drawn.
d) NOTES on Preliminary Time Assignments in the Divisions where a Finals Competitions is offered, Standstill 2-Red and Standstill 2-Silver time assignments:
1. A Drumline Director may request an earlier playing time than assigned due to conflicts or other reasons.
2. On a space-available basis all electronic entries time stamped or mailed entries postmarked October 23rd or later may be added to the playing performance schedule based or wait-listed.
(1) Late Entries will receive performance times available as published on the schedule at the time of entry,
(2) Wait-Listed will be assigned the performance time at the discretion of the Lone Star Classic Committee so as not to cause logistics planning problems with other schools.
e) All Soloists will be placed in random order of postmarked entry and paid entry receipt. The Lone Star Classic Committee reserves the right to make adjustments as necessary for soloists to accommodate other contest commitments with their own school’s drumline.
g) The Lone Star Classic may limit the total number of entries from all Divisions. In 2011, we anticipate a limit of 82 competing drumlines and 15 soloists in each Tenors, Snares and Keyboards.
4) INSTRUMENTATION
a) Any acoustic or electronic percussion is allowed. Electricity will be provided to a single outlet box. Each group is responsible to provide its own electric power cords and equipment.
b) Accompaniment by non-percussion instrumentation is permitted.
c) All music must be performed live.
5) FIELD RULES
a) Each drumline will be allotted a maximum time on the field of 12 minutes to enter, set-up, perform, tear down and exit the contest area.
b) The drumline will be signaled by a field official to enter the field. The start of the allotted time shall be when equipment crosses the start line onto the field.
c) The stop time shall be when all equipment has been removed from the performance area.
d) No performance boundaries will be imposed.
e) Times will be reported in the final scoring.
6) PERFORMANCE TIMES
a) The minimum field for any drumline, solo snare and solo tenor performance time shall be 2 minutes. The minimum solo keyboard performance time shall be 3 minutes.
b) The maximum field performance time for any drumline shall be 8 minutes
c) The maximum tenor and snare solo performance time shall be 4 minutes
d) The maximum keyboard solo performance time shall be 5 minutes
e) Performance time starts when the first note is played
f) Judging commences when the first note is played
g) All Divisions and all solo instruments have the same time restrictions.
7) JUDGING
a) A minimum of three and a maximum of four judges will adjudicate the field performances for Standstill Division II ensembles. A four-judge panel will adjudicate Standstill Division I ensembles and Marching.
b) Solo performances will be judged by a minimum of two and maximum of four judges.
c) Each drumline will be judged in and scores allotted to the drumlines in the following: Execution, Repertoire and Performance Effectiveness
d) Overtime / Undertime Penalties for drumline performances are based on the 12 minute allotment for set-up, performance and clearance from the field
e) Penalty deductions will be assessed to the Raw Score resulting in a Net Score and shall be assessed from the following table:

8) SOLO COMPETITION
a) The soloists will be announced. The judges will signal solo performers when they are ready to for the performer to begin. The soloist may choose to introduce themselves and the title and composer of their work. Soloist should begin with their compulsory.
b) The minimum performance time for solo snare and solo tenor shall be 2 minutes. The maximum time for solo snare and solo tenor shall be 4 minutes.
c) The minimum performance time for solo keyboard shall be 3 minutes. The maximum time for solo keyboard shall be 4 minutes.
d) Snare Compulsory: Double Stroke Roll, Open-Close-Open, not to exceed 60 seconds holding Close not less than 10 seconds
e) Tenor Compulsory: Single Stroke Roll, Open-Close-Open, not to exceed 60 seconds, holding Close not less than 10 seconds. Use a single drum.
9) RANKING
a) Judges will adjudicate each Drumline Standstill and Marching field performance based on a 100-point scale allocated as follows
· 40 points Execution
· 30 points Repertoire
· 30 points Performance Effectiveness
b) Judges will adjudicate each SOLO snare and tenor performance based on a 100-point scale allocated as follows:
· 10 points Compulsory
· 45 points Execution
· 45 points Performance Effectiveness
c) Judges will adjudicate each SOLO keyboard performance based on a 100-point scale allocated as follows:
· 35 points Execution
· 35 points Repertoire
· 30 points General Effect
d) The sum of the Judges scores will be divided by the number of Judges to determine the average Raw Score.
e) Penalty deductions will be assessed to the Raw Score resulting in a Net Score.
f) The Drumlines and Soloists will be ranked from highest Net Score to lowest Net Score
g) In the event of a tie:
1. First tiebreaker will be determined by ranking the drumlines based upon the average of the Execution Score.
2. Second tiebreaker will be determined by ranking the drumlines based upon the average of the Performance Effectiveness Score
3. Third tiebreaker will be determined by ranking the drumlines based upon the average of the Repertoire Score or Compulsory Score.
4. Fourth tiebreaker will be based on the lower amount of penalty deductions.
5. In the event drumlines or soloists are tied after four tiebreakers, the position will be declared a draw and each drumline will share the position.
10) AWARDS
a) Caption Awards in each Division will be given for
· Best Snare Line
· Best Tenor Line
· Best Cymbal Line
· Best Front Ensemble
· Best Bass Line
· Most Creative Drumline Show
b) Standstill 1-Red, Standstill 1- Silver and Marching Division Placement Awards will be given for the top five (5) place finalists
c) Standstill 2-Red and Standstill 2-Silver Placement Awards in each Division will be given to the top eight (8) place finishers
d) The Row Loff Productions, “Best Percussion Performance” will be awarded to the drumline scoring the highest tabulated score net of any penalties of all performances at the end of the contest. The Award consists of one traveling trophy and one permanent trophy.
e) Placement Awards will be given to soloists for the top three (3) performances.
11) EQUIPMENT STORAGE
a) An open area for temporary storage will be provided under your own supervision, and at the drumline’s own risk. The Lone Star Committee assumes no risk of loss, damage or theft.
12) JUDGES COMMENTS
a) Within approximately 60-90 minutes of a drumline completing its performance, the comment CD will be available at the North End of the Press Box. The judges score sheets will be available following awards for each Division.
13) PRACTICE AREAS
a) Each drumline will be allotted 120 minutes on-site prior to their performance. This time includes off unloading, warm-up and movement into position. All soloists may warm-up in the area between the school building and the designated drumline warm-up area.
b) Due to local city ordinance, warm-up and practice on site will be allowed only in the areas designated. Play outside of this area for all Divisions and all soloists is prohibited. Directors - - please help us comply with this ordinance.
c) Drumlines are not allowed to re-apportion their practice area.
14) DIVISIONS and CLASSIFICATIONS
a) Marching - Drumline performances that include marching and/or drill as part of their performance. Marching is open class and can comprise of any number of members
b) Standstill 2 – Novice and Intermediate experienced drumlines
1) Red Ensemble consists of groups with 20 or fewer members
2) Silver Ensemble consists of groups with 21 or more members
3) The LSC Committee and Tournament Director reserve the right to make adjustments to the segmentation to maintain even contest groupings. Notification to the appropriate directors will be given prior to the contest.
c) Standstill 1 – Advanced experienced drumlines
1) Red Ensemble consists of groups with 29 or fewer members
2) Silver Ensemble consists of groups with 30 or more members
3) The LSC Committee and Tournament Director reserve the right to make adjustments to the segmentation to maintain even contest groupings. Notification to the appropriate directors will be given prior to the contest.
d) Soloists – Snare, Tenor, Keyboard. There will be one class for each solo performance instrument.
15) INCLEMENT WEATHER PLAN
a) In the event of Inclement Weather, the Lone Star Classic Committee will consider the safety, the forecasts and the conditions permitting each group to perform equally to the conditions providing an optimum performance. After consideration of these factors, the Lone Star Classic Committee reserves the rights to amend the scheduled performances in any of the following manners as deemed appropriate at the time of the decision:
1) Option 1: move the groups scheduled to perform in the stadium into an indoor facility (gymnasium). If any one of the groups in the division (SS1-R or SS1-S or Marching) are moved indoors for prelims, then the entire division will perform prelims indoors.
2) Option 2: in the event of changing weather conditions on the field, a delay may be issued for performing groups. These announcements will be broadcast on Twitter.
b) In the event that delays or changing weather conditions preempt the full execution of the Finals Event for any division, then the scores from Preliminaries shall be used to determine Finals placement. As an example, if the first two SS1-R have performed and then inclement weather sufficient in the sole judgment of the Lone Star Classic Committee Chairman will prevent other groups from performing on “an equal plane” then the Finals Event will be stopped and the scores from Preliminaries will be used to determine the Finals Placement.
